Planting a late summer vegetable garden

Depending on the type of vegetable you are growing, their sunlight requirements would vary.

Vegetable plants that yield a produce above the ground like tomatoes, eggplant and beans would require plenty of sunshine. A minimum of 6 hours would be a necessity. Avoid growing these plants in shade.

Leafy vegetables, like lettuce and spinach, on the other hand grow better in shade. You would need to fend off sunlight artificially if they are grown in a spot which is hit by direct sunlight.

Vegetable plants grow for their edible root do well without much sunshine. Examples of these plants would be carrots, beets, radishes and turnips.

Sprouts can be grown in the absence of sunlight.

Warm season vegetable plants

The best plants to grow by summer are the ones which can tolerate the heat. If you make the mistake of planting cool season plants during summer, all you will end up getting is a dried up seed or plant.
